Meal or Pellets – Which Chicken Feed is Right for Me?

Chicken feed as meal or pellets? Many poultry keepers are unsure which form of feed is right for their animals. Our poultry expert Georg Welker explains when he recommends meal feeding and when pellet feeding.

"I generally recommend meal feeding for breeds that tend to feather peck. Because of the fine structure of the meal, the animals simply have to peck more often and longer until they have consumed the entire amount of feed. They also have to go to the water trough more frequently to quench their thirst," says our product manager for poultry feed. In meal form, Mifuma offers various types of feed for different needs in the life stages, from Chick Rearing Premium Meal to Laying Meal Premium.

Our poultry expert recommends pellet feeding when the animals are too selective when feeding with meal. "If the chickens only eat the coarse particles during meal feeding and leave the fine ones, they may be fed unilaterally or lack nutrients." The advantage of pellets is that the poultry keeper can be sure that all feed components - such as protein, energy, minerals, and vitamins - have been consumed by the animal when the entire amount of feed is taken. Mifuma also offers chicken feed in pellet form for all life situations - from Chick Rearing Premium through Young Hens and Cockerels Rearing to Full Power Grain Premium.
