For almost 30 years, Prachener Kanik pigeons have been populating Torsten Thomas's lofts. "My family has been breeding purebred poultry for three generations. I grew up with this hobby and hope to pass on this passion to my daughter. What fascinates me most about pigeons is their social behavior, especially during the breeding season, how a pair cares for their offspring and, even after many years, still coos lovingly as if it were their first day together—I wish the same for my wife and me," says Thorsten Thomas, explaining his love of breeding. In the early 1990s, he discovered the Prachener Kanik, which, with its powerful build, unique markings, red eye rims, and tight plumage, presents a real breeding challenge.
It takes years of work, strict selection, and optimal care and husbandry for a pigeon to be successful at shows. The health of the animals is the most important thing, so that they have the opportunity to develop in the best possible way. “The health of the animals is my top priority, which is why the feed is checked regularly. I have had the best experience with the mixture of Mifuma Breeding + Moulting Premium and Mifuma Fitness – and I feed them exclusively with this,” says Thomas.
