The responsible treatment of our customers, employees and suppliers, as well as of the natural resources of our environment, is firmly anchored in our corporate policy. For us, sustainability means pursuing ecological, economic and social goals equally and simultaneously, while never losing sight of animal health and animal welfare. Long-term thinking and responsible action form the basis of our economic success.
As a manufacturer of animal feed, we bear a very great responsibility. It concerns both the needs-based nutrition of the animals and the human food chain, both of which are directly connected. Therefore, we continuously work on improving our products, manufacturing processes, and packaging to keep our footprint as small as possible.
Environmental protection and the careful, sustainable use of our resources is a major component in the production of our feed. As a partner to agriculture, we commit to acting responsibly in the procurement of raw materials and by-products from the food industry and to producing feed as environmentally friendly as possible.
Reduced energy consumption through a certified energy management system
Our entire company is certified for its energy management, and we are continuously working to further minimize our energy consumption through the use of new technologies. Since 01/01/2020, we have been sourcing only green electricity, i.e., we receive electrical energy from environmentally friendly renewable energy sources. It hardly gets any cleaner: no coal, no nuclear, no biomass, just 100% hydropower.
Climate-friendly changes
Many small improvements drive progress. It’s not possible to do entirely without CO2 emissions, but we can keep our footprint as small as possible. That’s why we have implemented a variety of measures at our plant to run feed production as environmentally and resource-conserving as we can. These range from steam generation via district steam and frequency-controlled energy-saving motors to the fleet, which already consists of one third electric vehicles, including filling stations, which our employees are happy to use.
Less environmental impact through the use of highly available raw materials
Our modern feeding programs for livestock offer our farmers sustainable nutrient management with very good performance. In plain terms, that means less slurry, more milk, more eggs and meat, and better feed efficiency. The appropriate feed ration that adequately nourishes the animal without oversupplying it is the right way to protect resources and the environment. This allows, among other things, environmentally harmful substances such as nitrogen, methane, and phosphorus to be reduced and unnecessary discharges into the environment to be avoided. At the same time, animal health improves.
Sustainable raw material procurement
We deal with sustainable raw material procurement every day. In doing so, we primarily try to source our raw materials regionally. However, it is not possible to do this exclusively. Especially with regard to soy, we cannot be indifferent to developments on the world market, deforestation, and fires in South American and Asian countries. We have committed to taking concrete measures regarding the procurement of responsibly produced soy, both for goods from European production and for imports from other soy-producing countries. The use of soy for feeding purposes must comply with the established guidelines of the European compound feed association (FEFAC). Our goal is to make sustainably produced soy the mainstream in the compound feed market in the European Union by 2025 at the latest.
Use of environmentally friendly packaging
We offer over 95% of our bagged goods in environmentally friendly paper sacks. The paper comes from sustainable European forestry. In addition, bulk goods are sold entirely without packaging. Here, the feed is transported directly from our silo by truck into our farmers' silos.
We also accept our social responsibility. Our customers, suppliers, and business partners can be sure that we are committed to an equal-opportunity and prejudice-free working environment. We see ourselves as one big team that produces and distributes pet food under the best possible conditions. In doing so, we always keep animal health and welfare, as well as the reduction of the ecological footprint, in mind. We want to support healthy and sustainable agriculture as a strong partner.
Strengthening long-term relationships
We think long term. We are therefore also interested in long-term relationships with our customers, suppliers, and employees. We do a lot to achieve this. Our trained Mifuma specialist advisors in the field seek out and maintain contact with our farmers and breeders and support them with advice and practical assistance on feeding. In the process, our employees are continuously trained and further educated and, together with the office staff, form a strong team for the production of animal feed.
Early development of dedicated skilled professionals
In constant exchange with universities of applied sciences and universities, we seek future professionals and support them in a targeted way, whether through internships, academic theses, or support for doctoral dissertations. We have a special connection with the University of Applied Sciences in Bingen. Here, a large number of our feed trials relating to feed utilization and excretions are conducted, and many of our young professionals also come from here. In addition, we maintain a very close exchange with the Cooperative State University Mannheim. At present, several students from dual study programs are with us in the company. Alongside the training and further education of dual-study students, we of course also train in traditional skilled trades.
Mifuma Club for the Promotion of Biodiversity
Mischfutter Werke Mannheim GmbH actively supports clubs. In doing so, we not only support breeders in pursuing their hobby, but also contribute to the diversity of breeds and species of animals. Whether it’s a pedigree rabbit, pedigree poultry, or pedigree pigeon breeding club—we promote the clubs’ annual shows through prizes in kind and honorary awards, thereby enabling the continued existence of this hobby.
Social engagement in the public sphere
In addition to numerous tournaments, exhibitions, and trade fairs, we attend many regional events and actively support the customers and retailers based there. These also include many volunteer events that, with the help of our in-kind and feed donations, actively help people and animals in need.
Animal health and animal welfare are very important concerns for us. After all, the animals are our "customers" in the truest sense. Our products are made in such a way that they provide for and nourish the animal as well as possible, thereby preserving its health in the long term. In addition to animal husbandry, nutrition plays a decisive role in the well-being and physical health of the animal.
Feeding has a decisive impact on animal welfare
We attach importance to ensuring that your animals are supplied with all essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins. Quantity and composition are always tailored to their needs. The optimal feeding concept, which ensures the animals lack nothing yet does not allow overweight, is the right approach with regard to resource and environmental protection.
Special ingredients influence health
Additives such as probiotics, amino acids, and vitamins improve the digestibility and availability of the feed used. In this way, fertility and, for example, hoof health in cattle are increased while simultaneously reducing intestinal diseases and unnecessary excretions. The size and pelleting of feed also enable animal- and environmentally friendly feeding while improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Certifications for animal welfare
We are certified by KAT, the Association for Controlled Alternative Animal Husbandry e. V. Its principle is: the same conditions in all member countries for the protection of animals and for origin assurance.
As the first feed manufacturer in Germany, we were licensed by the association "Food Without Genetic Engineering e.V." This enables us to offer almost all of our bagged feed "without genetic engineering", so that our customers have the assurance of feeding their animals in the best possible way.
In addition, for many years we have offered an organic-certified range of feed for poultry, which enables breeders to produce meat and eggs in organic quality.
