Demand-oriented use of pig feed

Feeding nitrogen and phosphorus according to requirements for animal welfare and the environment

Nitrogen and phosphorus are elements that pigs consume daily through their feed. If intake exceeds the animals’ actual needs, the surplus is excreted via urine and manure. This excess then enters the fields through slurry and may leach into groundwater or be released into the air as gas. Increased ammonia formation can also occur within the barn, which can affect both animals and humans. For these reasons, greater attention has been paid in recent years to not only meeting the pigs’ requirements, but also avoiding excess nutrients in feed. This helps protect the environment without compromising performance.

Avoiding excess nutrients

One way to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus surpluses is the use of N and P reduced pig fattening supplements. By incorporating free amino acids, an optimal amino acid balance can be achieved. This allows the overall protein content of the ration to be lowered without affecting the animals. The addition of phytase improves the availability of phosphorus bound in phytate, helping to maintain performance.
