Controlled from cultivation to the bag.

Hay cobs are an excellent complementary feed for horses, as they can be used not only as a hay substitute but also as a high quality source of crude fiber. Mifuma Heucobs are harvested from species rich natural meadows and then gently dried and pelleted to preserve all nutrients. To ensure that no unwanted components end up in the feed trough, this natural product is subject to strict controls.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, plant compounds nobody wants

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are naturally occurring plant compounds produced as a defense against predators. They are found worldwide in around 6000 different plant species, including members of the daisy family such as ragwort, borage family plants such as viper’s bugloss, and certain legumes. Different types of PA can be distinguished based on their chemical structure. These substances are highly toxic to humans and animals and can, among other effects, cause liver damage. On pasture, these plants are usually avoided by horses due to their bitter taste, provided there is sufficient alternative forage. However, during drying, the bitter taste disappears while the compounds remain. If such plants are not identified and removed before harvest, they can contaminate feed such as hay, haylage, alfalfa, and other forage products.

Strict monitoring of cultivation areas

For our Heucobs and the associated cultivation areas, we have established a dedicated PA monitoring system. As part of this process, the meadows are regularly inspected for the presence of plants such as ragwort to prevent contamination. The Heucobs themselves are also tested in the laboratory for PA contamination. This ensures a high level of safety and consistent product quality.
