Tips for Keeping Rabbits in Summer

Veterinarian and doctoral researcher Florian Lohkamp is active in research at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. With his background in breeding fancy rabbits, he is a knowledgeable expert when it comes to rabbit care during the warmer months. We asked him why high temperatures pose a risk for rabbits and what recommendations he has for housing and feeding.

Florian Lohkamp explains: How summer heat affects rabbits

Summer temperatures are very demanding for rabbits and their metabolism. Rabbits regulate their body temperature by releasing heat to the outside. The optimal ambient temperature is around 15 to 20 °C, with some tolerance above and below. However, when temperatures exceed 30 °C and the animals can no longer regulate their heat effectively, it becomes critical. Without proper measures, there is a risk of overheating or even heatstroke.

Expert tips to reduce heat stress

Florian Lohkamp emphasizes that preventing heat stress starts with proper housing design. “If rabbits are kept on concrete flooring, heat dissipation is more effective compared to plastic floors.” He also recommends actively cooling the stable on hot days. “Cooling can be achieved by hanging damp sheets in front of the hutches and ensuring some air circulation. Another option is placing a sprinkler on the roof to lower the temperature.” Without such measures, rabbits may suffer heatstroke, which in severe cases can lead to circulatory failure. Warning signs of overheating include a very high breathing rate and a moist nose, in which case immediate action is required.

The right feeding during summer

In addition to external cooling, appropriate feeding can support rabbits during hot periods. Light feed such as Mifuma Balance with a high fiber content, herbal mixtures with plant based components, and the supplementary feed Mifuma Zucht Perle are recommended options for summer feeding. The fiber rich Struktur-Müsli, available in 15 kg sacks or convenient 3.5 kg bags, also provides variety. Knabber-Max, a large pressed pellet, offers both activity and a steady supply of feed and can be provided in the hutch or outdoor enclosure at all times. As always, especially during summer, rabbits must have constant access to fresh, cool water.
